Amazing product. Open the box, turn it on, never be lost again. Can't say enough regarding product; one thing missing is ability to communicate with vendor.

Review: Good value GPS
by: Thomas W. Ford on date: January 13, 2007
Excellent GPS. However, I have found that the quickest route which seems to be the default is not, often choosing roads that result in a much longer trip. If you can get it to choose the shortest route then it does give very good directions. Menu selections sometimes difficult to select.

The TomTom One is extremely easy to use and has been very accurate here in Los Angeles. I'm absolutely amazed with how detailed the street and freeway maps are. There is only one case a driver has to be alert for....directions are for the normal freeway flow, if you're in a carpool lane transitions between freeways are sometimes different than the standard lanes.

It say's you have arrived at your destination when you are still 50 feet away. Other reviewers identified that as a fault, it gives you an opportunity to look for driveways and parking spots.

Review: TomTom One Affordable and very usable!
by: B. Sparks on date: January 16, 2007
The Tom Tom One has been exactly what I had figured it would be and that is very operational and helpful, especially for the price I received my Tom Tom One.

It fit right into my car (Yukon) nicely and is not a hazard or distraction and has a daytime and night time lighting that is beneficial. The Tom Tom is loud at the highest setting and easy to follow.

I am still learning all of the options and learning the options is easy. The unit was easy to start out of the box and the instructions are easy to follow.

I am still learneing how to keep it zoomed out to the level that I want it at while driving, but that is the only thing I have not been able to manipulate easy, but I am sure I will get it soon.

I would recommend the Tom Tom One to anyone who is looking for a basic navigational system. Its small but the screen is easy to see while driving and the voice over allows you to never look at the unit while in traffic but still prepares you for upcoming turns and merges, etc...

The Tom Tom one is portable and can be taken from the car and placed in your front pocket of any average collered shirt. It says it has 2-3 hours of life once taken from the charger, but I have found my unit has more life than that, so in case you need to take a boat ride on the lake, you can take it with you and navigate your general areas on the lake in a boat as well.

I like my Tom Tom one and am very pleased at the price I had to pay to get it as well.

Review: John John?
by: Nicholas Davis on date: January 19, 2007
Yeah the tomtom is good for what it does, maybe being in a big city results in better maps or something, but its quite accurate, although it loves to take you on the freeway, which is unnecessary sometimes, but it can find alternate routes fast enough... The best thing about it however, is the downloadable celebrity voice of John Cleese, yes thats right, John Cleese... it makes travel so much more enjoyable. Get it for the maps and not getting lost-ness but love it for the JohnJohn.

This GPS system is very easy to work without reading instructions. The only complaint that my husband has thus far is that we know of no way to "mute" the instuction voice when we don't want it on all of the time.

Review: You're kidding me, TomTom
by: Belize042 on date: January 24, 2007
Sure, the customer support(Business hours only) is weak, documentation is poor, and the One sometimes takes several tries to start. I could live with that. But the one I received as a Christmas gift just stopped working, a month later. It won't progress past the startup screen even after being reset, and I'm taking a trip tomorrow. Thanks, TomTom. If I can get hold of the receipt, I'll be exchanging it for a Garmin.

Review: Mixed Review....I hope this does not happen to you
by: Eric Zaluski on date: January 23, 2007
First of all the quality of the TomTom One is excellent. Clearity and accurracy of directions is excellent and map quality is above average. I would have rated this product a 5 star item, except for the difficulties I have encountered with misleading literature and TomTom customer service. I purchased this same exact unit in September 2006 from BestBuy, so hopefully it will be different than the Amazon experience. Included within the packaging of the TomTom unit was a flyer indicating a free 2006 map update. According to the promotional flyer, all that was necessary in order to claim the update was to visit a TomTom corporate website no later than October 30, 2006. When I attempted to receive the free map update the day I purchased the GPS unit, I came to find out that the map update was not yet available. On October 15th, I attempted again, with the same results. Again I tried on the 30th, still no update. On the 30th of October I contacted TomTom and was informed the update was not even available....why they would advertise this with an expiration date prior to the products release is beyond me. I gave it another two months, and contacted TomTOm in December (two months after the promotions expiration date) and the release was still not available. I have since filed a complaint with the BBB and the only reply from TomTom is to offer me a free map update...although it is not available yet!!!!!!!!! It is now pushing February, pushing six months later and I have still yet to receive any promissed map update. Although the unit is nice, due to the lack of service from TomTom and the misrepresentation with the promotional literature, I will never own another product from this company.

Review: not really worth it
by: Srawan K. Thodupunoori on date: February 8, 2007
I bought TomTom one which looked fabulous. But I got real bad experience with it. Showing wrong destination time and not able to connect to phone by bluetooth. Tried couple phones none of them able to connect to the GPS. And more over typical driving direction, which took me 2 & a 1/2 hours travelling time where it should supposed to be 1 & a 1/2 hour. So I strongly suggest to check one more time before you go for it.

Review: Small, Smart and Super-easy to use...
by: Lizzy B on date: February 7, 2007
Just got my hands on a TomTom ONE last night and I can't tell you how excited I was to actually try it out. I'd heard really great things about it through reviews, friends' recommendations, etc. but had never used it myself. I was so glad to finally have one in my possession, and even happier that it was ready to go, right out of the box, something that I (someone who's not completely technically savvy) really appreciated. The size is perfect - the screen is definitely big enough, but the device is completely portable so I can take it from car to car and small enough that I can fit it in a purse or pocket. I'm excited to use it more but absolutely thrilled with what I've seen so far.

We love the TomTom. It is very simple to use. We particularly like the patient voice which very seldom becomes irritated with our poor tech skills. Only complaint was the voice can become muted without our knowledge, and we passed our tournoff point. We read the directions and it told us how to turn voice back on, and we were directed to turn around and back we went to our destination.

We loaned the unit to a out-of-town relative, who said he would never hhave gotten to the train station using a standard map. TomTom took him right to the door.

Review: WHY BUY TOM TOM? WHEN YOU CAN GET BETTER? A LOT BETTER!
by: D. HARPER on date: February 12, 2007
I am a professional driver. I have compared many GPS systems. Tom Tom I rate the lowest! Comparing Tom Tom vs Garmin. Out of 4 different navagation systems I rate Tom Tom a Zero. This system is not as user friendly and is NOT as dependable. Garmin IS user friendly, easy to operate while driving (even though your not suppose to) and very accurate! You cannot beat Garmin in my opinion. I would buy Garmin before any other navagation system. GO GARMIN!

Review: Not bad, but some issues
by: K. McCormack on date: February 12, 2007
I bought this for a road trip I took recently. First of all, I do like the unit and recommend it, but a few things I wish were better. First, the unit has "locked up" a few times in the couple of weeks I've had it. This means it won't turn on. Hitting reset with a paperclip fixes it, but it happens too often. Second, during the trips it told me to turn in the absolute wrong direction twice. Third, during a trip, it navigated me through a small city, I listened to it and wound up on an 45 minute adventure on some dirt road. It never did get me where I wanted to go, had to turn around and find the main road myself. Don't think this unit allows you to toss out all maps in your car!

The last observation is with the documentation and tomtom website. The site has been down a couple times already and the documentation is thin to say the least. I agree the basic functions are user friendly, but when I want to program do a bit more than basics, it is difficult to find out how.

Overall, still glad I bought it, but wanted to let you know of a couple observations.

I love this little "back seat driver", for once I don't have to second guess or wonder if it really knows where it is going. My husband (a police officer) sometimes takes it with him to work, he got into a chase and was able to call out his location at every turn. Which is normally done by memory or drive fast and hope to see street names at the same time. Now he thinks it should be standard equipment for all cruiser.

A friend of mine bought this today, and we set it up together. The TomTom ONE is remarkably user-friendly, extremely easy to set up, and intuitive to operate.

The screen features a nice "driving view" that was unavailable in GPS systems at the time I bought my GPS; this view is more 3D, very easy to read and quite appealing. For the price, it seems to be an incredible value.

The TomTom ONE kit comes with a USB cable that hooks up to your computer and a CD that can be used to manage it over the computer, giving greater flexibility in management. My old GPS can only be managed from the console in my car.

Seeing the capabilities of this portable GPS system, I wished I would have not had a different GPS installed in my vehicle, but instead purchased this unit. The TomTom ONE can be transported and used in rental cars on trips, or in friends' cars, and there are no worries about it being stolen, as it is small enough to stow away in your purse. Versatile, easy to use, inexpensive---what more could you want in an entry-level GPS?

Review: Tom Tom -- Not Not
by: J. Rosbury on date: February 21, 2007
At work, we use a Garmin, however, I wanted to give Tom Tom a try and found it to be really not to the standard of the Garmin. In addition, my friend has the Nuvi 350 and we took it on a trip and it was easy to use, good graphics, text to speech is good, just an overall good product. This goes for the Garmin that we have at work.

The Tom Tom One that I purchased was really subpar. There is no text to speech with street names. The Tom Tom says, "In 300 yards, take the next right." Also, the Tom Tom said their were resturants and hotels at an intersection and there were none to be found. Also, my Tom Tom dropped from my windshield when I was taking a turn. And last, the graphics are not very good. It does not even have my address on the map.

I would not recommend the Tom Tom... Spend the extra and get the Garmin Nuvi. Oh, the Tom Tom computer downloads were extremely difficult to work.

Hopes this helps,
JR

Review: Right on the money.
by: G. Reich on date: February 23, 2007
I'm a closing/settlement agent in the D.C. Metro area and I grew very tired of printing out Google Maps, toting them along with me, and then getting lost when I took a wrong turn. It was embarrassing to have to call a client for directions and even more embarrassing to show up late. With the TomTom, I plug in all my closings for the day ahead of time and scurry from one to the other very efficiently.

The small, compact size was the primary selling factor for me. I considered the Garmin nuvi, but I didn't really need mp3 compatability, photo features, music payback or text to speech features. I just needed something to tell me how to get where I'm going and reroute me if I have to change course. The TomTom One does all of that and more for a great price.

The unit comes with a USB cable to charge and interact with your computer at home, and a car charger for use on the road. It does have its own battery, and I've been able to get ~4 hours of life without it being on the charger. There is a windshield dash mount that is quite nice. You almost don't realize it's an accessory - it blends right in with the rest of the dash. I just quickly remove mine when I'm not in the car to avoid it getting stolen. It's small enough to fit right in my pocket as I go from closing to closing.

The display always shows you the name of the next turn/exit and how far away it is (you get a two-mile advance voice warning on long stretches), so the voice saying "exit right in 2,000 yards" versus "exit onto I-495 West in 2,000 yards" doesn't bother me as it seems to bother other users. I'm always peeking at the display to prepare for the next trun, so the lack of "text to speech" isn't a big deal for me. It's very intuitive and very easy to use.

You will get into an accident if you try to program this thing for a route while it is attached to the dash. I almost did several times until I had the sense to pull over and program the routes off the road. Simple changes are easy, but the touch screen does require a bit of pressure with your finger to get the keys to activate. There is a night mode that helps reduce the glare and relfection of the screen on the windshield. I recommend using it, as teh glare can be quite distracting.

I only have a few complaints. First, there is no bound paper owner's manual. Don't get me wrong, I had the unit up and running in less than five minutes, but I had to install the software CD and use the electronic manual to figure out some advanced features. Secondly, the TomTom Home software has not worked well for me at all on my Macintosh. I can seem to plan routes or do much of anything useful with it.

TomTom likes to tout the TomTom Plus (pay) features (weather, traffic and other updates via your cell phone and Bluetooth), but very few phones and carriers feature this functionality. Verizon and my Treo 650, for example, are not supported. Supposedly with TomTom Plus Traffic, the unit will alert you to any congestion, construction or accidents and work to re-route you. That would have been handy for me, but my phone doesn't support it and it's a bit pricy for the service.

For less than $300, I can't imagine a better-featured GPS. I have the built-in Honda navigation system in our second car, and the TomTom even beats it in some areas of functionality. I haven't experienced any of the inaccuracies that other have complained of as far as maps go and TomTom seems to be pretty good about software updates and the like.

If you need a basic, compact and easy-to-use car GPS, teh TomTom One will not disappoint.

Review: Worth Every Penny!
by: A. Montano on date: February 23, 2007
For under $300, this product is a no brainer. It is obviously not the best product on the market, but it performs it duties extremely well. The size is just right, large enough to see the screen clearly, yet small enough to tuck away into any pocket. The software is user friendly, and the unit is ready right out of the box. Make sure to update the maps by ordering the DVD from TomTom. Now for the negatives. It is a bit cumbersome attaching the unit to the windshield mount. On top of that, the power cord attaches directly to the unit and not the mount., which requires you to mess with the cord everytime you move the unit. Also, due to the size of the item, a carrying case should be provided, not sold for an additional $20. Overall, the signal is great, screen is crisp, Voices are clear, Software is smooth and the product is worth every penny.

Review: Good basic GPS at relatively low cost
by: Michael Sandman on date: February 25, 2007
I bought the TomTom One because I wanted a high level of portability with a legible 3-1/2" screen and also wanted the option of buying maps of Western Europe. The unit is small enough (thin enough) to fit into a jacket pocket, unlike the most feature-laden and more expensive TomTom 510 and 910 models. I considered getting TomTom's Navigator 6, which connects to a Bluetooth phone like my Treo 650, but the screen on the One is about 60% bigger than the Treo's, and unlike the Navigator 6, the One it doesn't require me to set up a Bluetooth connection to use it. Be sure to use a drop of water on the suction cup mount that hold the unit on your windshield; otherwise it will fall off.

You have to be willing to accept that the maps are never 100% up to date, and knowledge of teh locality beats any GPS system. The first day I used it, it told me to go to Boston Logan Airport by the shortest route, but it's not the fastest. Just the same, it gets you where you need to go when you don't have local knowledge, and that's what you buy GPS for in the first place.

It's missing a case and a 120-volt adapter, although you can buy both as accessories. I bought an inexpensive generic case for a digital camera to hold both the One and its 12-volt power cord. It also lacks text-to-speech capability, so instead of telling you, "Turn right onto Beacono Street" or "Bear left onto Interstate 95", it says, "Turn right at the next intersection," or "Bear left onto the motorway." That last phrase shows its Britsh heritage -- even with one of the US voices selected, it tell you to go "straight on" rather than "straight." Personally, I don't think that's a problem, and the name of the street our highway number is displayed clearly in the screen, but it's a matter of personal preference and about a hundred dollars.

Out of the box, took 2 minutes to get it working. To get the full list of features, you should change the preferences to see all the options, and then you can do things like: Change the ABCD keyboard to a QWERTY keyboard; decide whether to display a compass on the screen; change the screen colors; and a lot more. The options seem quite complete to me -- you can customize the display extensively; plan a route in advance and look at it turn-by-turn before you start; and save places you drive to often as "Favorites." For example, I go to Los Angeles frequently I can select it as a destination from a short list of Favorites rather than having to enter it each time I'm headed back to the airport. And you can tell it to avoid freeways, which can be useful in a place like LA.

I'd guess that most GPS units have a similar list of features, but the TomTom One is small enough to dump into a briefcase, large enough to be legible, easy to use. and complete enough to get you where you want to go. It gets four stars rather than 5 because there's no case or AC power adapter, but it's a five-star performer.

Review: TomTom One is an old model
by: Kees Dejong on date: February 25, 2007
TomTom One is an OLD model. In Europe and elsewhere the TomTom One has been replaced with the TomTom One NE or New Edition. It is lighter, thinner, and all evaluations in Europe agree: it is better!
There are two TomTom One NEs in Europe: "TomTom One Regional" (with a SD card of the country of choice, e.g., the UK) and "TomTom One Europe" (with a SD card of Europe). The latter is more expensive than the former.
Wait! The new TomTom One will appear in the USA eventually. March '07? April? May?

Review: Please fix the software
by: Michael Mccann on date: February 26, 2007
Please, please fix the PC interface software! Very difficult to use on the PC. Why isn't "SET A DESTINATION" a most obvious box to click on? In fact, it's not there at all. That's why you buy this in the 1st place, to SET A DESTINATION and get there. Of course BUYING FROM THE STORE is quite obvious. I'd love to re-design the user interface completely....it's frustrating. The device does work well, but that PC interface is a horror.

Bought the TomTom One to replace a Garmin that was a little to big for the new car.The TomTom had the level of portability with a legible 3-1/2" screen I was looking for. The unit is small enough (thin enough) to fit into a jacket pocket, Easy to store and carry in your hand if walking.

The TomTom does gets you where you need to go when you don't have local knowledge, and that's what you buy GPS for.
For around $300, this product is a no brainier. it performs it duties extremely well. The software is user friendly, and the unit is ready right out of the box. Save yourself and step and do not forget to register prior to putting in your car and turning it on. Being used to my old Garmin(2620) I do wish the TomTom had more POI's and a better interface to search for specifics. i.e Narrow down the food search by category. Other then that this is a great little unit and my Kids love the downloadable MICKEY from the UK voice. "Well done you have reached your destination, Well done"

Review: Love my TomTom One
by: Pogo's Mom on date: March 1, 2007
I've had this GPS since early December '06 after being introduced to GPS navigating in a friend's car using a Garmin unit. Being familiar with the Garmin over a 3 day period, I decided I needed a GPS to stop the arguing with my hubby as to where we are and when to turn, etc. He's directionally challenged. Anyway, I decided against the Garmin because I disliked the size of it and the nav screen when compared to the TomTom One. Also, you were pretty much stuck with the one female voice who would constantly say "re-calculating, re-calculating", etc. if you made a wrong turn.It would take a long time for the Garmin to re-calculate, whereas with the TomTom One, it doesn't keep repeating that it's re-calculating, but rather, it instantly updates your position and displays the new directions. Much less irritating! And, much faster, too. I have updated to the new free maps for US and Canada and I can already see many new changes that are more accurate. This is the only mapping software that puts my house exactly where it is on the street. Searching on the Web, one can find POI's of all kinds, including red light cameras, speed traps in the US. Very helpful. It's pretty neat to have TomTom tell you that you are going xx above the speed limit in a speed trap zone. I sprung for the John Cleese voice and my husband and I now refer to the GPS as "John", as in "John says to turn right, and so we will". His voice comes up with some cute expressions, like when you need to make a u-turn, or pay a toll or when you've reached your destination.

All in all, I can't imagine a better GPS at this point in time. Sure, there may be a few quirky things, but they are picky in the overall usefulness of the device. There are also new upgrades available thru TomTom, such as the new US maps, a better PC Home interface, a firmware upgrade for the latest and quickest GPS satellite chips. If one takes advantage of all these new updates/upgrades, all at no additional cost, you'll have the best GPS out there for under $500.

Review: Tom Tom One Rocks
by: C. Swecker on date: March 2, 2007
I ordered my own Tom Tom One after using a friend's on a dive trip to Florida recently. It literally put us at the front door of any place we wanted to go. The one time it didn't was our fault because the actual street address had been changed and we still had the old one. Once we corrected the "Street Address" point, we were there.

It is easy to use, and easy to navigate through the screens as you set your destinations. It takes a bit of time sitting at home playing with it to really get comfortable with it, and in that respect I would like to see an AC adapter included in the package, along with the hot point plug for your vehicle that comes with the Tom Tom. The AC adapter is available as a separate item.

The screen colors and print are bright enough and large enough to be seen without straining, and the "night color" setting changes the screen from the bright white, yellow, and red to more subdued blues and greys. This reduces the bright glare that would be present if the day settings were used after dark, and is still very visible. The voices that notify you of upcoming turns and other directions are user selectable - everyone should be able to find one that is pleasant and agreeable.

In a year or so, I will download the updated mapping system from Tom Tom, which will provide me with the newest roads and routes. I understand that will be free. It also has the ability (for an additional subscription cost) to connect with your cell phone or blue tooth technology to give you live traffic and weather updates.

[...] I know there are lots of other GPS devices out there, but I belive this is one of the best. Map chips can be purchased for most countries in the free world, which would be an advantage for those who travel overseas.

Review: Believe the commercial . . .
by: Peter Wu on date: March 3, 2007
This is a great basic no-nonsense GPS that works right out of the box, takes a minute or so to connect when turned on, but updates directions quickly when you go "off course." Works just as well as my wife's Acura Navi unit. Battery lasts ~ 2hours and need to use car adapter. I recharge the unit overnight using computer USB. Nice sleek New Edition form fits well in the car and easily beats out the Garmin 320/330. You can download multiple voices. My purchase last week included a free 2006 DVD map update that you can order online and I received it in 5 days. I chose this over the Garmin 320/330 and would highly recommend you do the same.

Review: So far, So good
by: JJ on date: March 6, 2007
I've only had this device a couple of days, but it is great so far. Some things are a little strange in its user interface, but once you get the hang of it, it is easy to use. I only have a couple of minor complaints with this GPS system. They are mainly with the TomTom desktop software, and their website. You MUST download the latest TomTom Home software, and do not use the TomTom Home software that is included on the DVD. I also have some complaints with newest version of the desktop software, but it will do for now. And their website states if you buy this by March 31, you can get a free map update (+ shipping). Ok, but I had to call them to figure out how not to be charged for it.

The device is great for $300. It's fairly smart. It will even try to guess you're position when you are not getting a signal. We have some long tunnels around here, and it started informing my of my next turn while I was in the tunnel with no signal. It guessed fairly close, because when it reacquired the satellite, it was only of my a few yards. Cool.

Review: Garmin > TomTom
by: Rex E. Barrett on date: March 9, 2007
I have to say that I was very disappointed in this item. I've owned GPS units for many years, I'm kinda a tech geek. I specifically have liked the Garmin line of products. I decided though to try the TomTom, yeah the commercials did their job on me. They were clever and cute for sure.

The problem with TomTom is its lack of more advanced features. This is a very simple unit, not complicated at all, that is good. But, but its simplicity comes lack of features. The biggest feature lacking is a trip odometer page that the Garmin units do so well. When I travel I like to see average MPH, travel/stopped time, etc. In the TomTom you only really have the map. I also like to see elevation and that is lacking.

This is a sharp unit for sure, but the lack of features and a problem with the unit locking up led me to send this item back and get the Garmin Nuvi. The Garmin is a great unit that INCLUDES a carrying case and all the chargers you would need. You get every accessory with the Garmin. The TomTom nickles and dimes you for the same items.

Yeah the TomTom ONE is a few bucks cheaper, but you don't get the case and extra cables that are a necessity. The Garmin also has many great features in the "travel section" of the unit.

Please consider the Garmin Nuvi, it is twice the GPS unit.

Review: Bluetooth claim is misleading
by: D. CHEN on date: March 10, 2007
The biggest dissatisfaction I have comes from its Bluetooth function claims. The product description leads me to think that it is a hands free device. I spent hours, finally figured out that the Bluetooth can only be used to transmit data to their TomTom Plus service via a cell phone, it is not a hands free device at all, which means you have to spend more money monthly to subscribe to the service and spend more money monthly to upgrade cell phone service to use your cell phone as a modem (otherwise you would get charged astronomical fees for data transfer by Cingular, Varizon......believe me, it happened to me and it hurts)
TomTom.com offers very confusing descriptions too, all pricing info is in Euro instead of US$.
If you don't want to spend the extra recurring cost to actually take full advantage of the Bluetooth, you may as well save the $100 to buy a Mio C310x, which is not equipped with Bluetooth, but has an MP3 player built in and its GPS function is just as accurate as TomTom One, not any worse by my testing.

The good: The design is nice and easy to use; just plug and go.

The bad: The lack of POI's is astounding. I went to the Tom Tom website and there were only a few options as far as downloading additional POI's - Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins were two, and a third was for 10-15 various retail stores, ie: Circuit City, Radio Shack, Costco etc. The website is not helpful at all. Also, the only way to choose either shortest distance, fastest route, etc, is during the initial set up, not when you plan each trip.

This is an item that every car should have. It has made it so easy to navigate in new territories that we travel to. You can trust it to pick the very best route and to keep you informed at all times where you are and about how long it will take you to reach your destination. My wife travels a lot with her job and she usually would leave an hour eary when going to a new location to allow time to get lost and found again. Now she leaves with adequate time to get to her site without that extra "lost" time. This a great product to own.

Review: tomtom one - nice but could be better
by: Arthur Robles on date: March 17, 2007
i liked that the tomtom one was ready to go right out of the box. but, i'll highlight what i didn't like or thought could be improved upon because everything else was basically nice and user friendly (especially for first time gps users).

1. it needs text-to-speech...it gives approaching distance instead of street names.

2. battery life was not very long.

3. it gave me some weird routes for destinations to which i knew quicker and better ways to get to.

i ended up returning the tomtom one.

Review: WONDERFUL UNIT
by: S. Carr on date: March 16, 2007
I have to say this unit has been great, no problems and very easy to use. I have had a Navman prior to this and it was very hinderous to plan a route, etc. My favorite feature with the TOMTOM is the fact that you can save your favorites and the ALTERNATE ROUTE feature which will reroute your trip on the fly. For example if I'm headed to a location but decide I'd rather stay off the interstate, etc. I can select any part of the route and TOMTOM reroutes using alternate paths. Great feature! The unit is small and compact easily transferable between cars and the screen is very easy to read. I would definitely recommend this unit to family and friends. The bluetooth traffice updates work very well also. I'm not sure I would pay the fee but trying it out during the promotional period has been very good.

Unless you drive the same path every day, you will find the TomTom One indispensible. Incredible resource for under $300. I did need to update my cell phone to a blue tooth capable unit, to provide live weather and traffic info. The installation, programming and portability couldn't be simpler.

Review: Wonderful gadget
by: Arnab Paul on date: March 19, 2007
We loved this little gadget for its usability, form factor and the out-of-box readiness. The user-interface is also pretty easy, barring a few occasions that had us confused. But that is primarily a matter of familiarity and convention. We are ery much enjoying the freedom from pre-trip direction-printing. it is also allowing to change tracks whenever we want to, by recalculating routes to the final destination. In summary - the gadget is doing its job very well.

Two complaints. The PC interface was too bad, and didn't work. Not that it matters though.
The map seemed slightly old and thus couldn't catch many current addresses and point of interests. So far, that didn't become a major problem for us, however I wish we can update the map very soon.

Review: Not as good as I thought
by: Praveen Pillai on date: March 21, 2007
I had a Garmin C330 before buying the Tom TOM ONE. I have to say that there is a lot of difference between both the products and the C330 is definitely the one better. Tom Tom maps seem to be a bit outdated and even for a small route, it somehow manages to find an alternative route..which is longer. The main disadvantage is the screen size..it is tough to type with the finger..I have started keeping a pen in my car..to punch in directions on the gps!!!

Very pleased with my TomTom One that I got from Amazon, etc.
The unit does what I want - directions vocally and graphically - period !!
Didn't want a unit that would give me lots of options that I'd never use,
just wanted a basic GPS direction type service. Oh yes, the price was the best that I found - from retailers to other on-line sellers. I first checked Consumer Reports for recommendations before I went looking anywhere.

Review: Takes you where you need to go...
by: M. D. Barnet on date: March 25, 2007
Overall, I'm pleased with my Tom Tom One GPS. The device is easy to use right out of the box. The touch screen works well and makes for easy programming. Two complaints keep me from assigning 5 stars. On several occasions, it seemed to me that it did not identify the optimal and fastest route, but it did ultimately take me to my destination. Also, for the price, I think that it should come with a home charger which is a must because the unit does not hold a charge for very long with the car adapter charge. A home charger costs another 25 bucks or so.

I've used the Tom Tom extensively for about a month and it's been a great help as I try to negotiate the often times complex roads in the Wash. DC area. I would definitely recommend this GPS for the price.

Review: Do Not Buy This Unit
by: Alien Evolution on date: March 27, 2007
BE WARNED - Many of the folks reviewing this GPS are giving it high ratings but are listing many faults. Others are probably first timers and have never seen what a real GPS can do. READ THE REVIEWS - Don't trust the stars on this one.

This GPS spent more time getting me lost than taking me to my destination. I used it for a 1 month period and was thoroughly dissapointed. I returned it and got a Garmin NUVI 350.

Want some examples?

1) My home was built in 1920. The town is just as old. It could not find it! It took me to the town and sent me everywhere but my house. I decided to follow it and it send just looped me around for over a mile and never reached any destination.

2) I was traveling to a party with my wife and luckily she had her GPS (Magellan 800). I put them both on in the car because the TOM TOM went nuts. I had less than a 1/4 tank of gas and it was sending me 20 miles out of my way to get to someplace the Magellan told me was only 7. Guess which one I followed.

3) I used the "locate" option which allows you to lock down the location of a place you would like to return to when you do not know the address (for example a restaurant or a store). When I got home I told my wife about this great restaurant I found and we got dressed to go, but when I chosed this saved location on Mr. TOM TOM, it kept saying "No Route Possible" and would not even begin to get me in the area. I tried it with all my other saved locations and same story.

Some other bad features:

1) Battery life is pathetic.
2) The unit only comes with a car AC adapter, which has a USB pin that is very easy to bend and brake (believe me I found out).
3) You will NEVER and I mean NEVER get the quickest route to a destination (I found this out using it with 2 different GPS systems which gave me quicker routes). Isn't part of the point of a GPS to save gas?
4) The unit does not signal you when you need to turn. When you get close to your turn, all you hear is "turn ahead in 300 yards" then the system starts to count down with no audio so you have to look at the screen while driving. The system never announces the street name or offers a bell or signal to indicate this is the corner you turn on. I had to do so many u-turns I lost count. If you miss your turn, rerouting is not a given. A few times it just kept on letting me get lost and never even rerouted me so I thought I was OK.

Review: Awesome GPS system
by: john on date: March 27, 2007
The satellite connection is awesome on the One, and the calculation time that it takes is only seconds. Once you update the maps, you can see all the restaurants, theaters, gas stations, and anything you might need to go to. The One is light and thin, opposite of most other GPS systems, which are thick and clunky, and it needs no external antenna unless youre really deep in the woods.

I bought the TomTom to navigate to friends address in Ft Myers, Fla. I live in Louisiana. It worked flawlessly, giving me excellent directions all the way there. by: G. Reed on date: March 29, 2007
easy to use but it has given me screwy directions a few times and twice it has not been able to find a street I was looking for, the internal map could be better. Also, I wish it had an alternative mounting bracket so it could be closer to the driver position for programing, it is a long reach to my windshield, and illegal to have it mounted there here in California. Overall pretty happy.

Review: Amazing for Price
by: K. Alice on date: March 30, 2007
I just got off a 25 city book tour and took the Tom Tom GPS along to help for a lot of the driving. It is almost better than my car's built-in GPS in some respects. The voice component helped my 66 year old mom when she drove and she is going to get one now, too. For the most part, it will get you where you're going and works as well as the really high-end GPS units.

3 problems I had (but understand that many portable GPS may have the same thing):

1. Unit doesn't power up easily. I had to repeatedly hit the power buttom and sometimes wait for 5 minutes to get it to work. I'm taking it in for this one.

2. Clock never worked correctly even after I set it repeatedly. A minor annoyance but you'd like to have the right time showing on it if it's going to have a clock.

3. Sometimes the directions are off, like most GPS's as changes in mapping and roads do happen. Unfortunately, this landed us in a snowstorm stuck in a snow bank for 3 hours when it erroneously took us down a secondary road that wasn't the right route for where we were going. This may be because the severe snow interrupted the satellite signal.

However, the GPS worked fine in snow in Boston, heavy rain in Seattle and overall got us to where we were going. I simply could not have taken this journey without the Tom Tom and so am very pleased with it. For the price, it is definitely worth it if you need to know where you are and where you're going or have heavy, complicated driving trips to take.

The kit contains all that you need to use it including cigarette lighter power cord and windshield mount. The interface is easy to use and I had both my 67 year old mom and 75 year old mother-in-law, who came with me for part of the trip, using it, putting in addresses and POI's in just a matter of minutes.

One thing about portable GPS as oppose to the built-in in your car -- it will not keep track of you when in tunnels or at the airport because it will lose the satellite signal. I'm sure this is true of all portable GPS where it's a tiny piece of technology receiving a signal as opposed to an entire car, which is the case with built-in GPS. So if you're landing in the airport and then, driving off, plan to stop about 5 miles from the airport to program the Tom-Tom once it has a signal. And have a basic idea of how you start out driving at first.

I highly recommend this product.

Review: Bad Maps, Crazy Routing, Poor Battery Life, Clunky Interface
by: Mr. GPS on date: March 30, 2007
Everything is relative. If you have never used a GPS before, or you work for TomTom, then the TomTom One is the top of the mark. If however, you have used GPS units from other manufacturers, the TomTom One is far off the mark. The problem, in my opinion, is the maps.

The TomTom's use inexpensive maps from a European company called Tele Atlas. Garmin, Magellan and just about every single built-in navigation system sold in the USA use maps from the US based NavTech. Ultmately, having accurate maps and points of interests is the most important thing for a gps unit. In order for a gps unit to calculate a route properly, it must have the attributes (one way, speed limits, stop lights, etc) for all the roads in the country. In my experience, the NavTech maps are just better. If they weren't, why would everyone except TomTom use them?

In addition, the interface is a bit cumbersome compared to the best from others and the battery life is not very good. Finally, if you do have any problems, and you will, TomTom customer support is considered the worst in the industry.

In GPS units as in everything else, you get what you pay for.

I have used other marine GPS navigation and some hybrid land/marine products but this is my first true land GPS navigation product. I bought the least expensive TomTom and it has performed as advertized, and in my view has been great! Intuitive to use, has tremendous accuracy and I really like the re-route feature. Last week it accurately got me to a coastal marina I'd never been to in heavy fog and rain without a problem. I'm very impressed with this basic unit...does everything I need it to do.

Review: good product - fatal software upgrade - very, very poor "service"
by: keith wallace on date: April 11, 2007
Initially my Tomtom One was excellent. Then I made the fatal mistake of allowing Tomtom Home to automatically upgrade the software. The device never worked again because it could no longer find any satellites! (My computer has the maximum security offered by Windows XP and Norton Internet Security so it seems unlikely that the process was contaminated in any way.)
On 11 Feb - I contacted Customer Service - nice courteous responses but no solution. Finally, on their advice, I returned it to the retailer on 27 Feb. It finally arrived at Tomtom Service on 8th March. That was the last I have heard of it!!!
I rang Tomtom Customer service on 2nd April and they could not trace the unit. Over the following 2.5 weeks I tried a series of faxes and online service queries but have received absolutely no human intervention or assistance.
In summary - I bought a "good" product, the online software stuffed it up and, over the following two months, Tomtom service achieved nothing except for apparently loosing my Tomtom!!!

Postscript: Finally, almost two months after seeking replacement of the faulty item, I have been advised that it is to be replaced. No apology or expression of regret from Tomtom but at least I will have a GPS.
Even though I vowed never to tangle with Tomtom Customer "Service" again, and I am free to choose the replacement model and manufacturer, I have found that Tomtom One still offers the best performance/price balance for my purposes.
I just hope that my new Tomtom runs well so that I will not have to be "serviced" again by Tomtom!

Review: Missing a lot
by: S. Lesnick on date: April 12, 2007
Interface issues aside (and there are many), the main problem with the device is the utter lack of useful Points of Interest. There are plenty of gas stations, restaurants, museums and schools; but if you're looking for any major chain store (Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Staples), grocery store, convenience store, basically anywhere you'd want to go every day, you're out of luck. You have to know the exact address of the place you need to go, which usually requires a quick internet search. Not very handy on the go. After recently seeing the built-in navigation system in my friend's car (which was several years old and had extensive listings for all the categories mentioned above), the inadequacy of my brand-new Tomtom was almost too much to bear, and I had to write this review. There are better systems out there.

Review: Works great... just dont connect it to your computer.
by: A. Duque on date: April 19, 2007
I have done a lot of research on GPS devices and TomTom One appeared to have more bang for the buck out of the box. And it does. You turn it on, configure it, type in the addresses and it works... up until you decide to install TomTom Home and connect TomTom to the computer. TomTom asks if you want to connect it to the computer and you say yes. Then you turn on TomTom Home and it states there are no devices connected. I've tried three different TomToms on three different computers, from three different stores (all BestBuy).

After a few hours with their Customer Service and returning the device to the store twice (I'm on my third TomTom in 3 days), they finally said I should exchange the device or mail it back to them, so they can reload the software on the TomTom. After reading horror stories of lost TomToms, I'm not taking my chance. I'm going to return it and lose the restocking fee.

I'm very disappointed. One of the features is TomTom Plus (Traffic and weather updates). In order to activate it you have to connect to TomTom Home, which means connecting it to your computer.

Works great, as long as you dont connect it to your computer.

Review: very good GPS
by: Penny Johnson on date: April 20, 2007
I like following features of TomTom One
1. It has intuitive user interface and is easy to use
2. It gives the user the choice of A-Z keyboard or QWER keyboard that we are all accustomed to since type writer was invented
3. Its 20 channel high sensitivity receiver
4. its compact size
I give it 4 stars because it cannot say the street names, can only say left/right/straight. Also, the map is slightly outdated

After the previous review on April 20, I used it for a recent travel to several national parks. In all cases, we arrived at the destinations by following TomTom One. I wish I had bought it earlier...

Review: Simple yet effective
by: The Shadow on date: April 27, 2007
Okay the first thing I would like to clear up is regarding other reviews of this product are basically hog wash. By that, no one really has a clue on what they are talking about even if they gave it 5 stars. No offence to anyone I just live an die testing technology prouducts. Ok since we got that out of the way I would like to point out if I was provided the opportunity this would have been 4.5 stars not 5; I will explain in a moment.

My Background:
- I have been providing Level 2-3 desktop and server support for the greater part of 8 years.

-Have owned/used three GPS units - two of which I will discuss today.

THE REAL REVIEW:

Overall the Tom Tom ONE Portable is an extremely nice unit with a few minor flaws. I will answer the most important question first. Is the unit reliable? The answer to that is clearly yes! Is the "Home" Software good? The answer is yes if downloaded from the site but NOT from the CD; it has been known to cause issues. You should contact Tom Tom to find out if the software is being worked on before downloading your copy. Download the .exe file not the Zip file. The .exe is faster and less likely a hacker could have messed with it. Otherwise, there are no issues despite what some say. Either they used the CD, which was a mistake, or they did something incorrect.

WILL THE UNIT BREAK?
Like anything if mistreated then yes. The unit is not to be tossed or flung like a pillow, kept in extreme hot or cold temperatures like your car over night, etc. In addition just as any GPS nothing is perfect even Gamin. Heck, I had a Quest 2 die on me once and take forever to recalculate; that does not mean it is a bad unit in general just because one unit of millions had an issue.

ACTUAL USE:

The tracking of the unit is actually dead on accurate. The unit performs a recalculation exceptionally fast should you miss a turn or went the wrong way. A minor flaw I have discovered is if there is a dead end the unit becomes frazzled and tells you to make a left or right when you can't. Simply turn around and you will be pointed in the correct direction again.

THE GOOD:

- 2-year warrantee!

-Will get you where you want to go no doubt.

-Provides you graphic images of the amount of time until your next turn, and the total trip left on the same screen.

-Zero chance of missing your turn as the unit clearly states over and over there is a turn coming up in X number of feet, yards, etc.

-Extremely clear to understand voices. Actually, 99% of them are very very good. If I spoke other languages those would be great too.

-Excellent screen resolution, brightness, and map detail.

THE BAD:

- Does not announce street names which would be nice. However, with the number of times the unit tells you a turn is coming up + the visual of the street or highway such as I-95 North you really cannot go wrong. It will actually say take the highway going north.

- The suck son cup: This is a major negative although I guess we only have ourselves to blame for this. Apparently, there were too many complaints that the unit was slipping off the cup. Well, Tom Tom now made the dam thing so tight that it is nearly impossible to take off. I would say you need to remove the base 40-50 times until the unit becomes loose enough to remove with ease. When attempting to remove, DO NOT have the unit over a table. Too much force is needed to remove; you run the risk of hitting the unit on the table.

- Navigating around the screen will take some getting used to. The device is user friendly but there is a learning curve compared to others.

NUVI 350 vs. TOM TOM ONE:

-Tom Tom has a much nicer voice selection clearer and louder for people hard of hearing. Both can increase and decrease the volume.

- Colors on screen: Tom Tom displays a richer deeper color.

- Both display heavily detailed maps. The Nuvi does allow you to reduce or add more details to the map; Tom Tom does not but the amount is actually just right.

- Nuvi 350 does have Text to Speech Tom Tom does not. Text to speech is the announcing of the street names. A very nice feature but the Tom Tom unit makes up for this by telling you a turn is coming up a lot more than the Nuvi. I used both at the same time on the same route to compare. Every single time the Tom Tom One alerted me first there was a turn or an exit coming up. It also alerted when it was time to get off the exit. Either one gave me plenty of time, the Tom Tom was just faster to the draw.

- Nuvi 350 has a far superior user interface there really is no comparison. The Tom Tom is not bad it is just more difficult to find what you want. For example if you are looking for Borders Books, you need to go through several menus to locate the screen where you are able to look. Categories are not clearly broken down, etc. On a positive note, once you become used to the device there is nothing to worry about; you will soon start to get a handle on things.

-Tracking is about the same. I did find the maps used on the Tom Tom will get you to your location a little faster when using the same route type such as fastest but we are talking about a 2 min difference; hardly worth worrying about. Auto recalculate is faster on the Tom Tom but the Nuvi is also not slow just the Tom Tom is much faster. However, the Nuvi allows the unit to let you manually recalculate much easier where in the Tom Tom you rather need to search through a few screens to obtain your option.

In the end, you cannot go wrong with either. The Tom Tom being less pricy is a big bonus but the fact that you need to struggle with the windshield cup is a rather large nascence and navigating around the unit is less user friendly. On the other hand if you are hard of hearing or would like to hear a really pleasing easy to understand voice then the Tom Tom One is for you; Gamin really needs to work in that area with all their units. Australian Karen is honestly the best you are going to get.

OK...I'm not a novice in dealing with computer hardware; I work for Intel. This bit of technology has been nothing but a frustration since I received it for my birthday. I wanted to download a 'custom voice', and found that I could ONLY do that for a US (American). After 2 months, finally figured out how to do that.

Presently, I'm trying to figure out how to gather traffic data from TomTom. But when I try to link that info, I see traffic info outside the US only. Wha? Tried to call Customer Support - wrong business hours. I have to call them from work? What kind of CS is that!?

I would recommend anything BUT TomTom...

This GPS will get you to where you need to go. It acquires satellites quickly and then rarely looses a signal, even in Boston. The maps are accurate enough and there are several different choices for route planning (fastest, shortest distance etc...). The screen is bright, even in the sun, and it is unobtrusive on the window.

Review: Buy a Garmin!
by: K. C. Kehoe on date: May 8, 2007
I can not begin to describe how bad the TomTom GPS system is. When my father ran the demo to get from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Charleston, SC (basically get on 95 and stay there until you hit southern South Carolina) the demo took 45 minutes, had him going hundreds of miles out of the way, off I-95.

The TomTom compared to the Garmin is night and day. You literally turn on the Garmin out of the box and the map shows you where you are. My husband, the ultimate electronic junky, was amazed. I only have good things to say about Garmin. Hope this helps!

Review: Beware of updates
by: Renee M. Paulus on date: May 12, 2007
The unit functions great. The home version on the CD is outdated. If you have a constant internet connection it will prompt you to download the update. Try the windows approach and wait a couple of months before attempting this one. Make sure you backup beforehand.

Review: Better than Garmin Street Pilot
by: D. Green on date: May 10, 2007
I bought a Garmin StreetPilot for my son for Christmas and it has really made his life and mine a lot easier. But, I found that unit a little too big and I did not like the voice prompts for turns. So, I bought this unit for myself. It is smaller and more portable, which is important to me because I fly and drive mostly. I think the voice prompts on the TomTom are better than the Garmin. I have not missed a turn with TomTom whereas I had some trouble with the Garmin. As others have said, the desktop interface is seriously lacking, but it is even worse on the Garmin. Why can't these companies figure that out? Trying to interface with the TomTom online services was a non-starter, so I didn't pursue that, either. Those items would have gotten the fifth star. But, as for out of the box performance, this unit is very good and it gets you where you want to go. Now, if Delorme ever comes out with a unit designed for in-car navigation, it will clearly solve the desktop interface problem and blow these guys away. They did just release a nice looking topo unit that does have street maps, but it really seems intended for off road/trail use as far as I can see.

The TomTom ONE does what it needs to do most of the time. New routes are calculated quickly when you miss a turn, without letting you turn around.

There are a few minor gripes about routing sometimes, but on the whole it works well and correct about 98% of the time.

The TomTom One is one of the best purchases that I have ever made, I have it with me all the time. I like it because it does not have all the bells and whistles of the other navigation aids. It does one thing and that is getting you to where you want to be in the shortest time. I use it every time that I go out. The TomTom One is worth its' weight in gold. I am glad that I brought the TomTom One and not some other navigation aid. Highly recommended.

Researched Consumer Reports and found this to be one of their best buys. Got it in less than a week and was ready to use it within minutes. Would recommend this item as it is smaller than the older more expensive versions.

The TomTom ONE is a fantastic deal for the price. Not as many probably-wouldn't-use-it-even-if-it-had-them features as the pricier models (I've already got something to play music) and functioned admirably for all the trips for which I've used it! Quite small and portable with good battery life once it's removed from a power source. Handy gadget even once out of the car!

After looking at the consumer report website, this TomTom ONE GPS model was considered to be the best value. So I went ahead and purchased this model. And I'm glad I did!!! It's very easy to use and very accurate. I thought it would be hard to specify a drive to location...but to my surprise it was so simple. It was a lot easier and faster than going out to a google.maps or mapquest. The driving directions are very accurate. I couldn't trick the system at all. All the features you get are very helpful...such as estimated arrival time, miles before next turn, etc. I really liked that it shows where gas stations and other POIs are located. When i was driving, my girlfriend had to use the rest room. The TomTom showed me where the next gas station was....i'm glad it did, because I never even knew that this gas station existed because it was hidden by tall trees. Plus the screen is nice and big.

Review: Very good product

The Tom Tom One is a very good GPS and it can be used right out of the box. I've had it for about a month and I have been to places I would have never dared go without the TomTom. I prefer not look at the screen but the voice feature is more than enough to lead the way since the voice instructions are 100% PRECISE. The TomTom One is also conveniently small and light so that I also purchased the carrying case and I take the TomTom with me everywhere I go. Love it.

THE MANUAL that comes with the TomTom, however, is a disaster. I was lucky I had learnt about the TomTom on TV and had seen it being used by a demonstrator. The manual is a real shame. It might have been written by a 3 year old. You need to get to page EIGHT to learn what they should have told you on page ONE. Except for the manual the TomTomOne is highly recommendable.

This GPS was quite easy to use. Setting up an "Itinerary" took some time. When navigating using the established itinerary, I found the unit constantly calling my attention to a right or left turn at locations I did not want and had not programmed. I don't understand why the unit did that. Perhaps when I contact the manufacturer he will be able to explain the problem or rectify it.

Review: Gets you where you want to go!
by: Julie A. Creek on date: May 20, 2007
Purchased the TomTom for an easy to use auto gps for my wife. It was simptle to set up (home location, recent destinations). The only faults I can see so far are having multiple screens to navigate to to select certain options. Navigating to POI's and turning them on or off can sometimes be a bit of an effort. The only issues I have had so far have been a bad USB cable shipped with the unit (customer support helpful from TomTom and they have sent a new one - have not received it yet however) and trying to update the map database. That has been a chore. I still need to contact customer support for help with that one. Overall, very pleased with the purchase. The window bracket has held up very well.

Review: Very poor navigation, otherwise nice features
by: Marc Meketon on date: May 18, 2007
I recommend avoiding the TomTom One. It gives wrong or at best misleading directions almost everytime I have use it in the last 4 days.

The TomTom One is easy to use, intuitive, and has a lot of nice features. But the all-important algorithm for routing needs major improvement. I have not used other GPS devices, but Mapquest, Google Maps and other internet services are much more accurate than the TomTom.

On one occasion, I would wind up traveling to the wrong state! Other occasions the directions will get me there, but taking an obvious round-about route. Many times the voice system says to do one thing that would have me miss an exit or take the wrong exit while the on-screen graphic shows the correct move (for example, the voice says to "exit left" while the graphic - at the last moment - implies a right exit). Since I rely on the voice more than the graphic, it's easy to get into trouble with this.

I cannot emphasize enough how many times there was something wrong with the directions, and for that reason I recommend avoiding this model. Below are several, but not all, of the problems I encountered in a 4-day test.

Example: Ambler, PA to PHL airport, and avoiding I-76. The directions start out wrong - it takes me on longer, slower local roads filled with traffic lights rather than using the shorter and faster Rt. 309 Expressway to the PA Turnpike with no traffic lights.

The directions end incorrectly - and somewhat disastrously, when it passes exit 12 of I-95 (which is the airport exit that takes you directly into the heart of the airport) and instead takes exit 13 and 3 local roads with multiple traffic lights (adding over 5 minutes to the drive).

Example: King of Prussia, PA to 923 Fairmount Ave, Philadelphia, PA. This was another disastrous error, where the TomTom gave incorrect directions that would have me drive into New Jersey. It said to take the 6th Street exit of I-676, and turn left. But only right turns are allowed. Then when I turned right, it said to then make a left. Doing so forces me onto the Ben Franklin Bridge and into New Jersey. It should have me get off of I-676 at the 8th Street exit, continue to 7th Street, and then turned left.

Example: PHL airport to Ambler, PA. There are 3 problems. One is nearly disastrous. First, it has me on I-476 and going to I-276 EB. Just before the toll booth, the voice says to keep right. If I did that, I would be forced to take the fork for I-276 WB (the opposite way). I need to keep left for the toll booth, then after the toll plaza keep right.

Further on this trip, I am on Rt. 309. The "voice" and the lower left of the screen says to "exit left" from Rt. 309 to Highland Avenue. It's an exit right. Funny that the screen graphic get's it right just when you are on top of the exit, but the advanced warning and voice has it wrong.

Then, even through it knows exactly where my house is, it takes me on a round-about path in the last block or so.

Example: Chicago to Ambler, PA, it says to take I-80 from Illinois straight to Rt. 309 in Ambler, PA. However, I-80 is about 50 miles away from Rt. 309 at its closest point. The real issue is that I-80 becomes I-76 in Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border (to stay on I-80, you have to take an exit), and then I-76 becomes I-276 near Philadelphia (to stay on I-76, you have to also take an exit). Since there are no turns off the highway, the device never notes that you do not stay on I-80. The 3D graphics have it right, but its very misleading to have the directions say I-80 when you need to go onto I-76 (and later, onto I-276).

It would be nice if the directions included where to pay tolls.

Example: It locates my mother's apartment building in Jenkintown, PA about a half mile from its actual location. To be fair, so does Mapquest and Google Maps.

Example: Traveling to Patten Rd, Highland Park, IL - it magically wants me to cut across a park to get from 1st Street to Patten Rd.

Example: Traveling to 125 Village Blvd, Princeton, NJ. It says there are two Village Blvds, one in "Kingston" and one in "Plainsboro" (Princeton is merely the post office box). Plainsboro police (not Kingston police) serve this location, so I picked the latter choice. Wrong!

Example: I asked for points of interest of rest stops and service stations to be displayed. They never showed while drive I-80, I-76 or I-276, yet there are service areas every 35 or so miles.

Review: Fantastic Performance -- Reasonable Price
by: John F. Smith on date: May 21, 2007
We just finished a trip through Quebec using our new TomTom One and wondered how we could have done without it. It was flawless in directing us through unfamiliar routes in Montreal and Quebec.

Even with the smallish screen, important information is easily visible and the audio is excellent. The data is easily readable in bright sunlight.

The only flaws we could find were (1) the POI information was spotty and out of date and (2) the GPS doesn't perform well if you stray more than a short distance from a road or street in its memory.

All in all, it was a bargain at Amazon's price.

Review: Excellent portable customizable GPS at the right price
by: SPL on date: May 23, 2007
After a great deal of research into similar models at a comparable price (Garmin SP330, etc.), I decided to go with the TomTom One. I must say that I have been nothing but pleased with the purchase. I found the TT1 extremely intuitive to use, and using the Tomtom Home application makes updating, backing up and customizing my TT1 very easy. Within an hour of opening the box, I had already downloaded and installed additional Points of Interest (Dunkin Donuts, Retail Stores such as Best Buy and Walmart), Voices (the celebrity voices make driving directions fun) and Map Colors (there are a variety of uniquely colored map schemes available) - I found all of these customizable features to make an already solid unit even better and tailored to my specific tastes. In terms of actual use, I find the TT1 to be pretty spot on with mapping and navigation - about 99% of the time. Occasionally it will plot a less direct route than I would have personally taken, but the great thing is I can just ignore it and it will adjust the route (in seconds) based on which direction I turned. I love the feature where you can simply tell it to avoid part of the route and it will recalculate (i.e. don't take me on the highway). Granted, many say the POIs are outdated which they may be, but will a POI database ever be truly up-to-date with all of the changing restaurants, stores etc.? I think this criticism of the TT1 may be a bit harsh given all that you get for under $300 - I find the major attractions (parks, beaches) and "critical" POIs (gas stations, police/fire dept.) are all there. As a basic GPS unit, it does the job. I had a "How did I live without this moment" last weekend, where I was driving through a remote part of CT and where I would have likely second guessed directions and gotten lost before, I was able to push forward with confidence knowing I had my TT1. I am extremely pleased with the features, ease of use and value I am getting out of this unit and would recommend to anyone looking for a solid GPS unit. I would also recommend, in terms of accessories, a carrying case and a more flexible mounting unit (you can find ones online that allow you to either mount to windshield, dashboard or vent and are easier to place the unit in). As Tomtom is a growing company in the US, I can only expect the POIs, Maps and Customizable Features to get better in the future.

I haven't even booted my TT One yet because I am still recovering from the ordeal of opening the plastic bubble package. The heavy duty plastic bubble required metal cutters and large scissors (while praying that the TomTom did not go flying). This insane packaging might help impulse sales in a retail store but is infuriating and is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Did I say that it is infuriating?

Well, I have been using my new TomTom for a few weeks now and I LOVE the fact that it can recalculate itself if I take a wrong turn to my destination. It will seek out an alternate route from my new location.
Only drawbacks I have found are 2 places where roads have been moved in the past year, so TomTom tries to take me to places that no longer exist. In a case near my house, it was no problem, because I was well aware of it, but last week it went fluey because the restaurant I was looking for wasn't where it was supposed to be, it was a gas station. haha. I have so much less stress driving with this GPS navagating system. If I need to get someplace I have never been before, I formerly used MapQuest.com and their directions are horrible. I would be stressed the whole time trying to follow them,...but with my new friend TomTom in the car with me, he tells me when to turn and such, no reading required. LOVE IT!!!

Considering that other reviewers have gone into great detail about this product, I will skip that. However, I will add that this product is extremely portable. It is also easy to use and easily programmable. One big plus is the fact that you can go on the TomTom website and download the updates to maps.

Review: I love this
by: Lou on date: May 31, 2007
It's built for the map-chllenged, like myself. The directions are very simple and easy to follow, re-computing directions when I take a wrong turn is quick enough that I can make corrections before it's too late. Also, I really like that the directions tell me which lane to be in in plenty of time to get there before the next turn!

Review: Very Helpful, Minor Flaws
by: Karsten Weide on date: May 29, 2007
This is a great portable navigation system at a very a affordable price.

The Tomtom One has reliably taken me to anywhere I wanted to go in the Bay Area. It offers a catalog of "points of interest" such as gas stations, restaurants, parking garages, etc., which is a great practical help on the road. Easy install and setup, great user interface, easy connection with the PC for downloading new data and backing up.

The One does have some minor flaws, but none is a show stopper. No, you CAN'T U-turn anywhere on 19th Ave. in San Francisco. And some restaurants it located in Mendocino County were not where it thought they were, but 5 miles up the road. Even when set to the United States as a region and to US English as language, it uses the word "motorway" instead of "freeway" and "yards" instead of "feet".

Bottom line: The Tomtom One generally works reliable and has greatly reduced my stress level when trying to find an address, at a price which I feel offers a lot of bang for the buck -- and it cuts down automotive marital squabbles by half. That alone should make it a worthwhile buy for anyone.

The TOM TOM ONE is well worth the money. The only problem that I have had with it so far is the gps loosing it's signal while traveling which can be a bummer if you are already driving and you don't have a clue where you are supposed to turn next while the gps is retreiving information.

Review: Everyone Should Get 'One'!
by: Kate M. Lau on date: June 4, 2007
I got this last week and am absolutely in love with it! I had to use it right away after I got it, and I did. I literally took the device out of the box, followed a few easy instructions to get started, entered in my destination and off I went! It worked great. So clear and easy to use. I can't imagine anyone driving without one, seriously. Like many have said in the other reviews, not the most up to date as far as maps go but still good enough. I'm glad I can go online and download any updates for free. I can now drive with a peace of mind knowing I will not get lost as long as I have this baby with me. Some people have mentioned that the instructions are not that great, but in my opinion it's really not that hard to figure out. If you click around a little, you'll figure it out in no time. Very user-friendly.

It's too bad the battery life is only two hours, though. It's good to have a car charger and a home charger. You can also charge using your USB cable connected to your computer, but it's a slow charge (up to 4 hours for a full charge).

Go get ONE!

I love my TomTom! I used to get lost in my own neighborhood, so it's nice to have the freedom to travel anywhere I want without worrying about planning my itinerary before I leave the house! Mapquest doesn't always give great directions, and even if it does, I still manage to lose my way. I was able to use my TomTom straight out of the box. Nothing to download, no battery to charge. It was ready to lead the way! I highly recommend this product to anyone!

I recently used my daughters TomTom to look up addresses while searching for a new residence in North Carolina. It worked perfectly finding addresses that we would have otherwise would have had difficulty finding.
The trip from Florida to North Carolina and back was a snap. It was very nice not to be continuously looking ant the map. We returned home I purchased my own TomTom. I will not take another car trip without it.
Also Amazon had the best price and fast delivery. Three days after I placed the order it was delivered.

I originally ordered this for my wife for her birthday and it got lost in the mail.Amazon of course replaced it immediatly i got it but it did not have an sd card that holds the maps so it would not work.I went back and forth with tom tom trying to get one they said it was amazons fault so i just broke down and bought a 1 gb card for 10 bucks. It was not amazons fault thatTomTom was being stupid

Anyways The unit tself is small, portable and can even be used walking or biking. The only problem i have had is the fact that the directions will take you thru residential streets if its the fastest and in some cases down dark dirt roads in the middle of the night. My wife is pretty scared the first time she encountered this issue

The device only see the quickest way it does not know if its a dark country road or a neighborhood with 50 stop signs and speed bumps.I really wish they would route you thru major roads but it only sees the fstest or shortest route depending on the settings

I have now bought two of the Tom Tom ones for my son and step-daughter. The beauty of this item is its portability. You can pop it into a pocket or purse and for the most part, the directions are dead on. My step-daughter recently drove from CT to NC without getting lost, which gives me, as a parent, great peace of mind knowing that she will arrive to her destination safe and sound.

My son uses the Tom Tom for his work doing pizza delivery. He has noticed that his tips are increasing because of his ability to get to the patron's homes without mishap. Also, when he doesn't need the unit, then his sisters will have access to it. Heck, the price is so good that I just may buy another one for the girls.

I highly recommend any of the Tom Tom products. If you want an economical but very excellent GPS, then I would suggest getting the Tom Tom One. If you need a few more bells and whistles, then stay with the Tom Tom product family and purchase a model up.

I ordered the TomTom One on Thursday afternoon via standard shipping and recieved the item the very next day! Wow! I found the TomTom to be fully functional right out of the box and still have yet to need to read the instructions since the interface is so incredibly easy to navigate. Downloading updates and features such as new voices could not have been easier. I downloaded the location of all Dunkin Donuts locations nationwide and anyone from New England will appreciate that little feature. There may be additional bells and whistles that the more expensive GPS units offer but I can't thkink of any that are lacking on this unit. It will get you from point A to point B very easily. What more can you ask for?

I have been really impressed with how this product performs. This is my first purchase of a GPS product and I wanted an inexpensive entry level unit. After several weeks of usage I cannot imagine what the high dollar units can offer that this one doesn't. My fiance uses it every day traveling to various locations and it has saved me from trying to route her home on several occasions. The points of interest came in handy this weekend since I forgot to get gas. We didn't panic when the low fuel light came on we just hit the POI button and we were there in a jiffy.

by: Tek Riter on date: June 14, 2007
I purchased my first GPS nav device (the Tomtom ONE) in April '07. I used it for relatively short local trips near home in NC and it worked flawlessly. Using it is easy and fairly intuitive. The windshield mount is excellent - it never came unintentionally detatched. But the real test of the device came on an 8-day vacation trip to Savannah, GA, St. Augustine, FL, and the Orlando, FL area at the end of May. Hotels, theme parks, restaurants and movies were found w/o a hitch. It made navigating in an unfamiliar location much less tense or stressful. I especially like the display indicators that show the distance to the next turn and the distance/estimated time to the final destination. Exploring side roads and making detours on a whim were accomplished without drama or fear of getting lost/disoriented because Tomtom was so accomplished at getting us back on the right trail to the intended destination. A paper map was never needed nor missed during the trip. I highly recommend this device. I think I paid something like $250 for an on-line order from Crutchfield.com.

Wish they'd let you test drive these things, but in a nutshell: tomtom One is easy and smart and will get the dumbest village idiot to where (we're) going. It works in the car or on foot and gently recalculates when I've tried to screw it up by going in an opposing direction. I've yet to download the optional voices but Mr. T is an absolute for me. The add-on extras will trick this out, but for just keeping on track, it is easy to see and easy to use, period.

Wait until you hear the voices that you can add: too funny! Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, John Cleese!

After my buddy drove by with his new Garmin streetpilot i5 I knew I just had to have a GPS too. So after reading all the reviews and pros opinions in my price range I choose the Tomtom one. After only 5 day of use this unit located my home on a differnt street. Miss my mother's home by a half mile. Located my daugther's house two streets east of where she lives. It has only been right on about 40 percent of the time. It is very easy to use but what good is that if it doesn't take to the location you want to go. Can I trust this unit in a city that is new to me to get me to the right location? I did check with Tomtom and I do have the newest map. By the way the Garmin my buddy has located my home at the proper location.

Review: Frustrated
by: G. Morgan on date: June 19, 2007
With so many reviews singing praise for the ease of operation, I feel like a dummy. I found the learning curve steep, the instructions minimalistic and the navigation of the screens awkward. OK, so I have learned, and that's over; now to the continuing frustration. First test trip in town, ONE led us to a finish point a half block south and block east of the actual location (different street & street number). In planning an eleven-stop itenerary, for two of the stops ONE would not accept a street number, though map searches through Google, Map Quest and Yahoo! Maps took the address and resulted in a parking-lot destination. As other respondents indicated, this leaves us anticipating a bad outcome on the trip (we have Google Map printed instructions--cost far less than the ONE). We'll see how it all comes out and update this review in a couple months.

I recently purchased this product for my stepfather who absolutely loves it. In fact as soon as he opened the box, he was in his car trying it out. He was like a kid at Christmas. He travels by plane and car and often rents car with the GPS but was having problems ensuring that the rental would have a GPS. Now he never has to worry about getting lost in the different towns or fighting with the rental car people over a GPS. He showed it to fellow employee who often travels with him and he loved it so much that they are now working with thier company to purchase this product for all the sales staff who travels. He needed something that could travel well on the airplane and with the carrying case, this GPS does just that. So if you are looking for a great GPS that is light weight and travels well either by plane or car, buy this one.

This device is excellent for the person who has no computer savvy what so ever, or is like a fish out of water when it comes to electronics. The touch screen makes it possible for any one to use it. No complicated programming, your choices are displayed, just touch the screen on the command you choose. What can be easier than that. The menus are very clear for super quick navigation. Gives good forewarning before a turn with a great easy to read screen during travel. I definitely recommend the tom tom one. Thumbs up

Review: Perfect for me!
by: Susanne R. Dufek on date: June 24, 2007
First of all, if you are trying to decide "TomTom One" or "TomTom One XL"- they only got one thing different (I called Garmin and TomTom before I made my purchase) it's the size, everything else is the same! The hight of the screen is the same as far as I can see , the XL a whopping 100$ more expensive is only a little wider then the One- does one really need a wider screen- no not really! I've seen my Tomtom One in action and it shows plenty, it tells you soon enough when to turn (and you can see where the next turn is going to go by a little arrow in the left corneron the bottom)which makes a wider screen unnessesary! Believe me , I'm a Widescreen person, TV and PC and all, but in this case I'm, glad I didn't waste the extra 100$ for a little wider screen!

I love my TomTom One and it goes with me wherever I go!It is very light and easy to install! First of all, I gotta say the Customerservice is great, they are prompt, very friendly and really take their time to walk you through if you got some questions or problems! It comes with a big variety of voices (some on the TomTom the others free to download on it) but you can also purchase extra voices of celebritys which actually is quite a hoot. My GPS actually gets me laughing with it's funny remarks for example when it litteraly moans to me turn left onto the highway and then go faster, faster, faster..... (it depends who and what voice you got!)

I've used it quite a lot and I found it actually to be very correct, I'd say up to about 10 feet actually! I live in a very small but extremely fast growing city and so far I've only had one problem where it told me that no cars are allowed on that particular street but they where, buit in the end this wasn't even a problem even to me!.

It extremely fast adjusts lets say (at times it draws it's info from up to 10 Satelites (I can see it on the screen upper right corner), it tells me go this way but I was destracted by my son and miss the street, it thinks for a second and then shows you right away the new route to your destination!

there is alos no need to tell the TomTom where you are laving from by adress, since it's by Satelite it knows it right away and will still guide to correctly to your destination! It also shows me Gasstation in Symbols along the road while driving!

It actually very correctly tells you (if you wish) how long it'll take you to get to your destination, given the fact you stick with he speedlimits, it'll also tell you how much time you'll need to make up in order to get to your destination at the time you planned it for!

I just love my little TomTom!

It comes with a USB Cable for the PC you can charge it with anda n Adapter for the Car! Since the battery in the TomTomOne only lasts about 3 hours the Adapter for the Car is great. Sure it'd be better if the Battery would last longer but that doesn't bother me, since it did come with an Adapter for the Cigarettelighter I don't care, my TomTom One will go as long as I need it too as long as the Battery of my car lasts plus 3 hours *hahah&*

the mopunt it comes with is great witht he big suction cup and easily to install and take down! I do wish that it wouldn't be kind of tough to slide the tomTom on the mount, it's easy to do it when you hold both things in your hand but if the mount is stuck on the window it's kind of touigh to stick the TomTom on it! It'd be great if it came with lets say a Velcrowpatch on the mount,t hat way I could leave the mount on the window until I use my Tomtom One again or when I leave my car so it doesn't get stolen. But, since it's easy enough to just pull the Mount of the windshield I still give the TomTom One 5 Stars!

I read other reviews here and some gave the TomTom a very poor judgment which I can't really understand. Like I said I found my tomtom very accurate up to 10 feet and less and yes, the signal can be thrown off with a strong disturbance and then maybe show temporarily a wrong street I guess, but I had that only once. I wanted to go home, I had been at a adress in my city which was kind of hidden adn I knew I wouldn't find my way out. It showed my street kind of messed up, so I again gave the order for the destination and this time it got it correct and the screen looked right too! It works perfect 99,99% of the time!

Even GPS-systems that cost very much can misslead you or mess up, and for that price the TomTom One is top of the line for me and much more practical then many other way more expensive and more complicated GPS systems.

You can hook it up to your blootooth of your Cell and Tomtom One will give you live updates ono Traffic ahead AND lead you around it! Haven't tried that though but I will soon, once I've turn the Bluetooth Capability on on my Cell!

I love it and I'll recommend it to everyone! Read the instructions, call the Customrerserviced if you got a question or problem, there is no long waiting or anything. You'll love Tomtom One too, just like me!

Review: TOO BRITISH FOR THIS AMERICAN !!
by: Frank G. Risalvato on date: June 25, 2007
Accurate but annoyingly British for those of us that are blue blooded 100% AMERICAN.

Even the "American/U.S. Voices" insist on calling a "Freeway" a "MOTOWAY" and an exit ramp a "Whirl-away". Couple that with annoying British accent (even in the U.S. version) and it makes me want to puke.

At least it ain't a French accent.

The first time it told me to take the "Whirl-away" I thought it wanted me to get on an amusement park ride! A Whirl-a-WHAT!?!?!?

We double checked we has "U.S." voices but it still used many Northern Europe/U.K. acronyms and nicknames I'm completely unfamiliar with.

Besides that annoyingly stubborn nod to Europe - and blatant ignorance of U.S. terminology - It was accurate but did not have enough Points of Interest for the U.S.

It desperately needs more current uploads for the U.S. If you are driving to any new development built within the last two years you are out of luck as the software release was programmed before that.

The online web site/software has many "Downloadable items" and Upgrades" BUT ONLY IF YOU LIVE IN NETHERLANDS, U.K. OR NORTHERN EUROPE.

FOR THOSE OF US IN THE U.S. - WE'RE OUT OF LUCK!

The "Free Bonus Code" downloaded a French voice I did not even want (and then could not uninstall it). And NO i'm not wasting time calling Tech support.

I'm one step away from going back to Radio
Shack to try the Magellan which was $100.00 less than the $299 I paid for Tomtom.

I wish it had a good American voice like Mel Gibson, Larry the Cable Guy, or Jeff Foxworthy - Now THAT would make driving MORE FUN wouldn't it!!

I used a Garmin Nuvi 350 at another job and it was great for one simple reason; it called out the street name I'm suppose to turn onto. The TomTom only tells you to turn in feet or miles.

It takes getting used to and it does work, but using the Garmin before this product ruined my impression of this TomTom. For a few dollars more I prefer the Garmin.

I will pawn it off on someone else and buy the Garmin.

I bought this product after a recommendation from an already satisfied customer, and I must say, he was right.
I just returned home from a 4,000 mile road trip through 6 western US states and TomTom ONE was brilliant. It really comes in handy when you are in a big city by helping you find restaraunts, pharmacies, parking, gas stations, etc. The product has a few limitations, but they are not enough to worry about. For the price, TomTom ONE is worth every penny. I am extremelly thankful I purchased it and would highly recommend it.

This product is amazing! I took TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigation System on a business trip with me and it easily found my client's location. The only minor problem I found was that it may be off by one or two buildings. I'm not sure if it is a software update issue or just the accuracy of the tracking satellites, but it is fantastic. Especially the audio feature that talks you to your destination without having to look at the screen while you are driving. The volume even increases automatically the faster you drive. It also gives you plenty of warning when your turn is coming up. I recommend this to anyone who travels to places unknown.

Review: Great GPS
by: Stephanie on date: June 23, 2007

Thumbs up

Review: TomTom One is Easy and cool!
by: Mark F. Braun on date: June 18, 2007

Review: Wonderful Vacation Travel Companion
by: Tek Riter on date: June 14, 2007

Review: Can't live without it
by: A. Henry on date: June 12, 2007

I've been in cars that have a built-in navagation systems and this product is just as good. It has everything you can think of to get you where you're going. Day and Night screens, choice of voices, itinerery planning, choice of displayed items including speed, the list just goes on and on. Price is right for what you're getting and it will get you to places that don't even show up on internet mapping systems!
